As the Arctic warms the ice regime has completely changed over the last decade or so. In this time multi-year ice (MYI) has almost completely vanished being replaced by single year ice (SYI). Single year ice is very different lacking substantial thickness and strength. It is easily broken up by storms and wave action. In this video Professor Peter Wadhams talks about the changes to ice in this Arctic region.
