Explaining The Danger (Part 2): Now for some explanation of why we are right on the edge

by Bru Pearce

The earth is a highly dynamic planet; it changes dramatically over the billions of years of geological time, continents drift apart and come together. The gradually increasing brightness of the sun, changes in the orbit of the earth around the sun and moon around the earth, are all causes that have had the effect of making the biosphere (all living things) change and adapt. Those adaptations extend right out to promoting atmospheric changes to maintain environments suitable to support life.

Bru Pearce- Explaining the danger

Summary: It’s a fact; carbon dioxide in the atmosphere traps the Suns energy. In the last 200 years man has nearly double the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels. The heating caused by increased CO2 levels means that there is more evaporation leading to higher levels of water vapour in the atmosphere which is even more potent as a greenhouse gas. In this respect CO2 is acting like a thermostat turning up the CO2 turns up the heat.

Temperature And Co2 Concentrations Graph

We know from observation that the average temperatures of the atmosphere and the seas are rising, further that temperatures are rising faster at the higher latitudes than at the tropics. In addition we have observed that night time temperatures are also higher on average. This is all consistent with a greenhouse effect with more energy being trapped by the earth’s atmosphere than is being radiated into space. We also know that the proportion of green house gasses in the atmosphere is rising fast. Ice core records provide us with samples of the atmosphere going back 400,000 years through several ice age cycles and we can correlate CO ² levels to earths historic temperatures. This tells us that at the depths of the past four ice ages CO ² levels where about 180 ppm and at the warmest parts of the interglacial’s CO ² levels where around 280 ppm. The current interglacial has so far continued for about 12,000 years and under the normal cycle of earth’s orbit we should soon be dipping slowly into another ice age.

The Plan

Facing up to climate change, repairing the system and looking forward to a bright future

I find myself talking about climate change a lot, explaining the consequences of rising atmospheric CO2 and Ocean acidification, of how it is a here and now problem, that is getting exponentially worse year upon year as weather all over the world gets more extreme. With the result that I’m often seen as a prophet of doom delivering a message that no one really wants to hear or is prepared to believe. Far too often the retort being; “that the problem is too big to deal with, what can anybody do about it, better to carry on as normal”?

Geo engineering after the auto pilot has been turned off

Without life, Earth would be a very different place, probably much more like Venus, very hot with no seas, a CO2 and nitrogen atmosphere and clouds of sulphuric acid; a wholly inhospitable place! It is life based on a common genetic structure (of which we are one of the most recent and advanced incarnations) that has manipulated the planet into the state it is in today.Life has created oxygen and removed greenhouse gases so as to produce an atmosphere that is conducive to its evolution; it has maintained the oceans, built mountains and adapted the atmosphere to the increasing power of the Sun and regulated the temperature of the planet.  Life has even been able to repair the Earth’s environment after major geological or astrological events have disrupted it causing great extinction events. As such, all life forms on earth are part of a terra-forming Life Entity, within which every individual life form is related, each is a part of an unbroken chain of genetic reproductions events that started 4 billion years ago.
